The five referendum questions concern both labor and security issues, as well as citizenship.
One of the proposed referendum inquiry aims to reduce the legal residency requirement for acquiring Italian citizenship from 10 to 5 years. Specifically, it seeks to amend Article 9 of Law 91/1992, which currently requires a decade of uninterrupted residency for individuals with non-EU citizenship applying for naturalization.
All Italian citizens registered with A.I.R.E. (the Registry of Italian Citizens Residing Abroad) have the right to vote. According to Law No. 459 of December 27th, 2001, Italian citizens residing abroad and listed on the electoral rolls can vote by mail, with the ballot envelope sent directly to their residence address. To ensure timely delivery of their voting materials, it is crucial that citizens abroad verify and update their address details through the online consular portal FAST-IT or alternatively by contacting the Italian Consulate competent for their residency area.
Italian citizens residing abroad and wishing to partecipate to the referendum must submit ballot request to the AIRE Town Hall, trough the Consulate, by May 7th.
Voters abroad take part in early voting by mail, as the results must be finalized by June 10th, when voting in Italy also concludes. The ballot envelopes will be delivered to their residential address by May 21st.
ATTENTION: if voters have not received their ballot envelope by May 25th, they should contact their consular office to request a duplicate.
