The directive on work-life balance was published in the Official Journal on 12 July 2019. EU members states shall transpose the provisions into national law by 2 August 2022.
The directive’s aims are to support harmony between personal and working life (for both parents and carers), to encourage equal sharing of parental leave between men and women and also to address the problem of women’s underrepresentation in the labor market. Once transposed into national laws the provisions should make it easier for people working in the EU to balance work and private life.
