One of our clients has recently received the decree granting Italian citizenship by marriage in just 6 months from the submission of the application. This is an impressive result – considering that the time set by the law is 24 months, which can be extended up to 36 – which demonstrates that, despite the difficulties and delays encountered in many Consulates, not all offices are at a standstill.
The case relates to a procedure for citizenship by marriage and confirms that, where the documentation is complete and in good order and the Consulate’s internal timeframe allows it, the process can proceed quickly and smoothly.
At a time when many people are complaining about long waiting times, it is important to point out that not all Consulates/Town Halls are in trouble and that it is still possible to obtain citizenship in a reasonable time, especially through the matrimonial route, which is confirmed to be more streamlined than other procedures.
Given the ongoing discussions around potential changes to the Italian citizenship law – specifically, the proposal to restrict citizenship applications by marriage to individuals residing in Italy — it is advisable for those living abroad who wish to apply for Italian citizenship through marriage to consider moving forward with their application in a timely manner.
