Italian Citizenship by Descent: Key Amendment Proposals from the Senate of April 29, 2025, and May 6, 2025

During the April 29 and the May 6, 2025, Senate session, several proposed amendments to the citizenship by descent process were discussed. Some amendments have been rejected. Key points include:

• “Grace period”: Applicants who requested or were awaiting appointments before March 28, 2025, or submitted partial documentation by March 27, may still qualify under previous rules.
• Language test: those claiming Italian citizenship from an Italian great-grandparent may need to prove B1-level Italian language skills or hold an Italian degree.
• Minors: Proposals suggest allowing citizenship registration withing the first year of life, or by age 18, or within one year of reaching adulthood.
• Siblings: Children of Italian citizens with Italian siblings may still be eligible, even if new rules would otherwise exclude them.

Important amendments concerning the reacquisition of Italian citizenship have been proposed but their wording is ambiguous and unclear. Updates will be provided as soon as they become available.
