Italian Citizenship: New Instructions on How to Register your Child or Reacquire Citizenship

Following the entry into force of the new law on citizenship (Law no. 74), The Ministry of the Interior has begun issuing circulars to provide officials with guidance on how to apply the new provisions.

Accordingly, circular no. 59/2025 of June 17^th, 2025, has just been published, containing instructions for civil registry officials on how to perform two procedures related to Italian citizenship applications: registration of minor children and reacquisition of Italian citizenship.

Please see below to verify whether you or your children qualify for one of the two procedures mentioned in the circular.  

Registration of minor children (under 18 years of age)

The circular mentions the following categories:

• Children of Italian parents who are minors until May 31^st, 2026,
• Children of Italian parents who are minors as of May 24^th, 2025 and who will turn 18 by May 31^st, 2026,
• Children of Italian parents who are not registered by May 31^st, 2026,
  1. Under 1 years of age,
  2. Over 1 years of age.

Reacquisition of Italian citizenship

This procedure applies to individuals who lost their citizenship before August 16^th, 1992, following articles 8 (paragraphs 1 and 2) and 12 of law 555/1912.

Therefore, applicants must fall within the categories outlined below:

• naturalization in a foreign country,
• renunciation of Italian citizenship due to involuntary acquisition of foreign citizenship,
• loss of citizenship as a minor due to his/her parent’s naturalization.

What steps should I take if I fall within these categories?  

In all cases, applicants are required to follow the steps outlined by the competent authority, pay a government fee and submit all necessary documentation, including a declaration of intent specifically drafted to reflect their individual situation.
