Self-employment visa for corporate directors and officers

Foreign nationals appointed as officers (Chairman, C. E. O., Member the of the board of directors, Auditor) of Italian companies (Srl, Spa) in activity since at least 3 years can apply for a self-employment visa. The foreign national will have to provide evidence of being appointed as an officer and of receiving compensation from the Italian company. Also, it is important that the Italian company can prove to have financial stability and turnover.

Who is Eligible for Self-employment visa?

The type and number of self-employment (Lavoro Autonomo) authorizations available to non-EU nationals are set by means of the quota decree (decreto-flussi). Not all self-employment categories are available each year.

General eligibility requirements are:

  1. .have suitable accommodation in Italy;
  2. .have financial resources exceeding the minimum level set by the law for the exemption from healthcare contribution (8.500 Euro);
  3. .obtain a Police Clearance (Nulla Osta) in Italy;
  4. .have certificates, documents, attestations as required for the type of self-employment activity to be performed (applicants must meet the legal requirements for the performance of the activity in question, including, when required, the prerequisites for entering into professional registers)

Self-employment visa Application Procedure

Even though there may be slight variations from one category to the other, the basic procedure for obtaining a work permit is the following:

  1. Work permit (Nulla Osta) Online application, filed by the Italian employer/host company;
  2. Work Visa (Visto) application, filed by the worker at the Italian Consulate which has jurisdiction over his place of residence.
  3. Entry into Italy, within 8 days the worker must go to the local Immigration Office (Sportello Unico per l’Immigrazione), sign the contract of stay (contratto di soggiorno) and/or file the application for the residence permit (permesso di soggiorno).
  4. Obtain the EU Blue Card Residence permit (Permesso di soggiorno Carta Blu UE). The Police issues an EU Blue Card residence permit (Permesso di soggiorno Carta Blu UE) valid for 2 years for open-end work contracts or for the validity of the contract plus 3 months, in case of a fixed term job contract.
