With law No. 206 of 26th November 2021 – in force since December 24th, 2021 – new disposals have been formulated in order to make the civil judicial cases more simple and efficient.
Among such dispositions, article 36 provides that cases regarding the request of Italian Citizenship by those residing abroad will be handled by local Courts of the place of birth of the Italian ancestor.
Having said that, as of June 22nd, 2022, judgments relating to cases per maternal lineage before 1948 won’t be dealt with by the Court of Rome anymore, but by competent local Courts.
So far, the civil case concerning the requests for Italian Citizenship under the 1948 rules of iure sanguinis submitted to the court have an approximate duration of 24 months. However, with the introduction of this new disposition, such duration is expected to be reduced.
