National Health Service: Italy May Introduce Annual Fee

Italy May Introduce Annual Fee for Non-EU Nationals Adhering to the National Health Service
17 October 2023

National Health Service: Italy may introduce an annual fee of 2000 euros (approx. $2,109) for foreigners residing in the country to access the National Health Service.

This measure has been introduced into the draft of the Italian budget law for 2024. The Ministry of Economy stated that there will be discounted rates for those with legal residency, foreign students, and au pairs, although specifics were not provided.

The impact of this reform on the existing payment system for certain categories of foreigners remains unclear.

Concerns have been raised by some politicians, specialists, and doctors, who suggests that this reform may contradict the Italian constitution’s guarantee of free medical care for those in need.
