NEWS: the Chamber of Deputies approves the conversion into ordinary Law of the decree-law n. 36

May 21, 2025

After two months of debates, the Italian Parliament converted into ordinary Law, the decree-law 36 (issued on March 28th by the Italian government), bringing significant reforms to the rules governing citizenship by descent.

On May 20th the Chamber of Deputies approved the conversion, following the earlier Senate approval on May 15th.

Below the key principles of the new Law:

  • Italian citizenship can only be claimed through a parent or a grandparent
  • Minor children of Italian citizens born abroad do not receive automatically citizenship
  • The applications submitted before March 27th, 2025, to an Italian authority will be processed under the previous regulations.

The full text of the new Law is not yet available, but it should contain further measures. To stay up-to-date, follow our website: www.mazzeschi.it and our LinkedIn profile.
