Citizenship applications: adjudication term reduced from 4 to 3 years

Oct 27, 2020

Law Decree 130/2020, which is in force since October 22, 2020, partially reformed the Salvini decree 113/2018 and reduced the processing time of the Italian citizenship by marriage and by residency, from four years to three years.

There has therefore been an improvement in timing, however, we have not reached to the two years envisaged before the Salvini decree of 2018.
The new 3-year term applies to applications submitted from October 22 onwards, while the 4-year term remains unchanged for those who already have a pending application for citizenship.

Moreover:

  • the Italian language test remains mandatory, to be passed before sending the application electronically;
  • the residence permit for pending citizenship can be converted into a residence permit that allows working activities.
