Why does having an Italian parent or grandparent matter?

Individuals whose parent or grandparent is, or was, an Italian citizen by birth may benefit from a significantly reduced residence requirement when applying for Italian citizenship by naturalization.

Under Article 9(1) (a) of Law No. 91/1992, if you have an Italian parent or grandparent, you may be eligible to apply for Italian citizenship after only two years of legal residence in Italy, rather than the standard ten-year residence requirement generally applicable to non-EU citizens.

What are the requirements?

To apply under this provision, you must satisfy the following conditions:

• Legal residence in Italy: You must have maintained legal and registered residence in Italy for at least two years before submitting your citizenship application. While travel abroad is permitted, your residence must be genuine, continuous, and effective.

• Income and tax residency: Applicants must demonstrate an annual taxable income meeting the minimum thresholds established by law, which vary depending on the applicant’s family composition and the number of financially dependent family members. Income must be demonstrated for the two years preceding the application, in accordance with the applicable legal requirements. It is also essential to verify that the income falls within the categories recognised for citizenship purposes and that the applicant has established tax residency in Italy.

• Italian language requirement: You must demonstrate proficiency in the Italian language at B1 level (CEFR) or higher, unless you qualify for a statutory exemption.

• Criminal Record certificates: Applicants are required to provide the relevant criminal record certificates based on their current citizenship(s) and countries of residence.

Does completing two years of residence guarantee Italian Citizenship?

No. Meeting the two-year residence requirement does not automatically result in the grant of citizenship. Once the application is submitted, the competent authorities will assess whether all legal requirements have been satisfied.

How long does the process take?

The statutory processing period is 24 months from the date of application, although it may be extended to 36 months. If the application is approved, a citizenship decree is issued and signed by the President of the Republic.

Unsure whether you qualify?

Determining the most suitable citizenship pathway can be complex, especially when assessing ancestry, residence history, income requirements, and supporting documentation.
