The Elective Residence Visa (residenza elettiva) is a long-term visa that enables non-EU citizens to establish permanent residence in Italy. It is reserved for individuals who have sufficient passive income, such as pensions, annuities, rental income, or financial investment, and do not intend to work in Italy.
It is also known as the Italian retirement visa.
Who is Eligible for the Elective Residence visa?
Main requirements are:
- Demonstrate annual passive income of no less than €31,159.29, originating from sources other than employment or professional activity
- Provide proof of suitable accommodation in Italy, either through property ownership or a valid lease agreement
- Show a genuine intention to reside permanently in Italy
- Be able to provide strong and documented financial stability, as consulates often require income levels well above the legal threshold
- Acknowledge that work is not permitted under the elective residence permit (permesso di soggiorno per residenza elettiva)

Applications must be submitted to the Italian Consulate with jurisdiction over the applicant’s country of residence.
