Startup Visa in Italy

Program Overview

The Italy Startup Visa program is aimed at entrepreneurs who wish to relocate to Italy to establish a start-up company that meets the legal requirements set forth in Law 221/2012. The program also applies to individuals intending to join an innovative start-up already certified and operating in Italy.

This visa is subject to annual immigration quotas established by the Italian government.

Who Is Eligible for the Italy Startup Visa?

There are basically two options.

1.Establish a New Startup in Italy

• Proof of financial resources: A minimum of €50,000 available to be invested exclusively in the creation and operation of the start-up.
• An innovative business plan: A well-structured project with a clear technological or digital component.

The program offers a streamlined process that includes:

• Online submission of the application for preliminary clearance (Nulla Osta).
• Issuance of a self-employment visa and the corresponding residence permit upon approval.

2. Invest in an already existing Startup

The start-up visa is also available to applicants intending to join a start-up that is already operating in Italy. In this case, the following conditions apply:

• An investment of at least €100,000 must be made in the start-up.
• The applicant must take on a qualifying role, such as:
  • Chairman
  • CEO
  • Board Member
  • Auditor
• The applicant must also work with the company as a self-employed professional (e.g., independent consultant, business advisor, etc.).

Certified Incubators

The law also allows applicants to submit their visa application through a certified incubator which shall be an Italian company authorized to host start-ups and support them by providing:

• Technical, legal, and managerial assistance
• Access to infrastructure, office space, and equipment

This option is particularly beneficial for applicants who may require additional support in launching and growing their venture.
