Short-Term Stay In Italy: Business Visa for Fashion Models

Fashion models traveling to Italy for less than 90 days to attend business meetings, castings, or similar non-remunerated activities may apply for a Schengen Business Visa.

This visa is available to visa-required nationals who are formally invited by an Italian fashion agency for purposes such as:

  • Meeting with agencies
  • Attending casting calls
  • Negotiating future engagements

Please note:

According to guidance from the Italian Ministry of Labour, individuals holding a business visa are not authorized to work. Activities such as participating in fashion shows or photo shoots, which are paid and considered work, require a work visa.

Required documentation for a business visa includes an invitation letter validated by ASSEM (Associazione Servizi Moda), along with proof of:

  • Purpose and duration of stay
  • Valid travel medical insurance
  • Adequate financial means of support

Visa Waiver Nationals

Models from visa-exempt countries may enter Italy without a visa for short stays (up to 90 days), but are still expected to carry supporting documentation, such as:

  • A formal invitation letter from an Italian agency
  • Proof of medical insurance
  • Financial means of support

Important clarification: Based on official communications from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Labour Department, fashion shows and modeling jobs are considered paid employment. If such an activity is planned, a work visa is mandatory, even for short stays.

Long-Term Stay in Italy: Self-Employment Visa for Fashion Models

Italy does not offer a dedicated work visa for fashion models. Therefore, their immigration pathway is governed by the general self-employment visa (visto per lavoro autonomo) process.

This visa allows foreign nationals to work in Italy as freelancers or consultants, subject to the annual immigration quotas (Decreto Flussi) established by the Italian Government.

Fashion models may apply under the freelancer category, but the process involves significant administrative and practical challenges:

Key Steps:

  1. Obtain preliminary authorization in Italy, including:
    • Police clearance
    • Declarations from the competent national authority
    • Signed contracts with Italian clients or agencies
  2. Submit the visa application at the relevant Italian Consulate or Embassy in the applicant’s home country.

Challenges and Limitations of the Italian self-empoyment visa

The self-employment visa is highly selective, and it is subject to quota limitations. Even applicants who obtain preliminary clearance in Italy may face visa denial at the consulate, due to:

  • Inconsistent interpretation of requirements
  • Lack of coordination between Italian authorities and diplomatic offices
  • A generally restrictive consular approach to self-employment visa issuance
