Italian Permit of Stay for Awaiting Citizenship

Did you know that there is a permit of stay category for “awaiting citizenship”?

Many Italian citizenship applicants are interested in the awaiting citizenship permit of stay (in Italian: permesso di soggiorno per attesa cittadinanza). However, in order to apply for this type of permit, the applicant must fix his/her residence in Italy.

So, if an Italian citizenship applicant is interested in obtaining this type of permit of stay, he/she must be careful of possible consequences of fixing their residence in Italy as:

• Residency cannot be temporary. If it is ascertained that residency is ficticious (as it recently happened to 600 Brazilian citizens who have obtained citizenship in Nettuno, a city near Rome) citizenship can be revoked;
• Accordingly, taking residency can be an option only if you intend to move permanently to Italy.
• Furthermore, taking residency in Italy, also for a short period, can bring some tax liabilities.

Having said that, let’s take a look of how the Awaiting Citizenship permit of stay works.

If you are eligible to Italian Citizenship, there is the possibility you can apply for the Italian Permit of Stay for awaiting citizenship.

First, you need to confirm your eligibility to citizenship. Then, you must be sure to have all supporting documents and certificates, duly legale and translated. Having completed these two steps, you will have to travel to Italy.

Once arrived in Italy, you must file a residency registration application at the City Hall (Comune). Be aware that for this step, you will be required to submit also a minimum 1-year lease agreement together with other required documents.

After residency will be confirmed, the next step is to file the citizenship application and submit the supporting documents at the competent City Hall.

Once the Citizenship Application will be submitted, the next step is to apply for a permit of stay “awaiting for citizenship” at the Post Office.
