Law No. 74 opens the door to reacquisition of Italian citizenship
Decree 36/2025, as converted by Law No. 74/25 has established a “grace period” for those interested in reacquiring Italian citizenship. According to the recent regulations, individuals wishing to regain Italian citizenship can submit a declaration at the Italian Consulate abroad or at the Italian municipality if residing in Italy, from July 1, 2025, to December 31, 2027.
This opportunity to reacquire citizenship through a simple declaration is only available to those who were either Italian citizens born in Italy or Italian citizens who had resided in Italy for at least two consecutive years and lost their citizenship before August 16, 1992, in accordance with Articles 8 (paragraphs 1 and 2) and 12 of Law No. 555/1912, therefore under the following conditions:
- Naturalization in a foreign country;
- Renunciation of Italian citizenship due to involuntary acquisition of foreign citizenship;
- Loss of citizenship as a minor due to cohabitation with a parent who lost their citizenship
What should I do if I meet one of the above requirements?
Applicants are required to demonstrate prior possession of Italian citizenship and its subsequent loss through the specific documentation requested by the Ministerial guidelines. Afterward, they will be invited to submit a declaration of intent (specifically drafted and to be submitted in person before an authorized delegate performing civil status functions), along with the payment of a government fee. In the absence of any impediments, applicants will be declared Italian citizens starting from the day after the declaration.
